Broken Tomie Kurayami

  • I was inspired by the work of Junji Ito and his manga character,Tomie Kawakami. I decided to draw her with pieces of her face cracked and broken because the character is just a young student that was treated like a broken doll. Even though she can regenerate herself and multiply with disconnected parts of her body, the scars and memories from herself still remain. So, the flowers resemble the death and repeated rebirth of Tomie. I also decided to add Kurayami to her title name because it means darkness in Japanese because it contains Tomie’s manipulative and selfish personality, even though she is the most beautiful girl. It highlights the meaning that there is beauty in darkness, but there is also brokenness behind beauty.

  • To me, creativity means the ability to freely express oneself through something that a person originally creates. It can also mean creating anything without limitations.
