After You’ve Gone - Django Reinhardt

  • This is a tune that I first heard legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt play. I thought the solo he played would sound really cool on the mandolin, and the way in which the solo was written plays nicely on the mandolin. In the video I’m also playing with a violin and bass. At points in the video the mandolin trades licks and Ideas with the violin while the bass keeps time and hold down the groove. The original song was written in 1918 with lyrics, but I thought it would sound interesting to do just as an instrumental tune. Even though the song is over 100 years old, musicians from today’s generation can still appreciate and learn from these old compositions.

  • To me, creativity is about expressing yourself in unique ways that feel special to you. It’s not about trying to create something that has already been done but rather making something new or interpreting something in a new way.
