Adieu

Ava C.

White Alabaster

  • My stone sculpture, Adieu, is inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s recurring theme of birds. This piece, however, is not a bird, but a teardrop. I worked on this sculpture when I was still 17, yet eagerly anticipating turning 18 and entering adulthood. Knowing that my next stage in life is going off to college, this teardrop symbolizes the bittersweet emotions of soon leaving home and my parents, yet feeling utter excitement for college life and beyond. I started the process of subtraction using a hammer and flat-edge tool to chip away at the edges. Since a teardrop is rounded, I quickly departed from those utensils, making my way to big files and rounding out the edges. Finishing up the stone, I went from 60-grit sandpaper to 600-grit sandpaper. Finally ending with a polish with tin oxide.

  • Creativity is having the freedom to expand on any concept and make it one’s own through a well-lived process of thought and application. With inspiration from things seen, heard, felt, tasted, and dreamt, creativity allows us to tap into our senses beyond what we already have experienced and dare imagine.
