A Flawed Reflection

Ishita K.

  • My poem, ”A Flawed Reflection” is about my own personal story as an overweight teenager. It reflects on an often unspoken struggle that a lot of teens like me, especially girls, face everyday. I wanted to highlight the toxic and unattainable image that is placed on us from a very young age, almost like a burden we are forced to carry. This poem takes the reader through my own journey of experiencing this type of pressure, and how I overcame those pressures placed upon me. I hope that others going through the same, if not similar struggles, can also realize that their beauty has nothing to do with how the world views them, rather on how they view themselves. We define our worth, we are deserving of acceptance for who we are, and most importantly, we are just as beautiful as the rest of the world.

  • To me, creativity means being able to contribute a special part of my own journey to the rest of the world. Expressing my true self through my writing is what allows me to feel free and excited for what’s to come in the future.
