Your Language of Song

Victoria V.G.

  • I am a 2nd generation Filipino-American on my mother’s side, but so often feel disconnected from the culture, particularly because I cannot speak or understand Tagalog. “Your Language of Song” is an attempt to explore my relationship with the beautiful, melodic language that colors my childhood memories. It also mentions my great-grandmother and namesake, and my worry that my isolation from my Filipino heritage means I cannot truly live up to her name and legacy. All direct usages of my name have been blacked out in accordance with competition policy.

  • To me, to be creative is to have the courage to explore unknowns with unrestricted grace. In the context of introspective art, I believe creativity entails exploring and expressing one's inner thoughts in a way that is free, yet controlled enough to be understood.
