The Plains

Edie G.

  • "The Plains" is a chamber piece written for violin, clarinet, cello, and piano. It is inspired by Willa Cather's novel, My Antonia, and by Nebraska where my father is from and where I have spent a lot of time. I wanted the composition to convey a sense of traditional American music, while also reflecting the expansiveness and spareness of the landscape. The piece starts with a minimalistic intro, in which I used open chords and harmonies that precede a melody that resonates throughout the piece. The middle section has a darker character, speaking to the ways in which the openness of The Great Plains can become eerie and disorienting. This piece is in memory of Granny, who loved to sing.

  • Creativity is the ability to use the knowledge I have in new ways to express my thoughts and feelings. Creativity in music is finding ways to be innovative while honoring a long history of rules and forms.
