The Far Shore

Jessica L.

  • The Far Shore was a practice piece to develop descriptions of each of the five senses. The creative process involved researching Japanese and Chinese spiritual beliefs about life after death, taking particular inspiration from Buddhist ideology surrounding the salvation of all souls. The character God or Death was taken from the guardian figure of Jizo, who guided travelers and children who died young. The Far Shore is a message of grief from a family imagining what their child will experience in limbo before the afterlife. Imagining that she will cross over with the help of a kindly divine figure is a form of closure.

  • Creativity is my opportunity for introspection. As I write or draw or express myself in new mediums, I'm documenting my thinking through art. My writing is inevitably inspired by what I'm drawn toward consuming in media, and drafting my own story is a reflection of how I internalize and learn.
