This self portrait was influenced by David Hockney drawings and Renaissance portraiture. Like Hockney I grew up always drawing, so when I saw one of his childhood self portraits I saw myself in it—the awkwardly intense gaze, the big round glasses. Then, when first sketching out the drawing I was reminded of some Renaissance portraits, and modeled the composition after them. The upraised hand is also Renaissance inspired with its sharp foreshortening and dramatic gesture. In this case my hand suggests drawing as an act of conjuring something from nothing.

Creativity means a freedom to express myself, explore new ideas, and show others the beauty I find in the world.
