Look at the Flowers I Got You

  • Look at the Flowers I Got You is a short fiction that shows but a small fraction of what grief can feel like when a loved one is gone. I find it intriguing when the same phrase is used at the beginning and end of a story with a different tone because it shows the impact that context has on a sentence. I thought of using flowers as a symbolism of how one puts thought and effort into their gifts. It's well-known that it's the thought behind a gift that counts. Flowers that are gifted aren't special just for being flowers but because of why they were given. The pink carnations at the end of the story symbolize gratitude and "never forgetting someone". The narrator Liliana shows her gratitude towards her loved one and that she'll never forget them even if they're gone. In the end her heart finally accepts the fact that he's gone. This short fiction also shows that love is a beautiful feeling that comes with grief and pain once it finally ends. Life and love couldn't be precious if death and pain didn't exist.
