Sophialyn D.C.

  • This original choreography, which incorporates aspects of street dancing, was produced for a large-scale performance. When I created this, I wanted everyone to enjoy themselves while learning the fundamentals of street dancing, such grooves and textures, regardless of prior dance experience. In addition, I generally choreograph in the dance studio at my school, but for this piece, I was confined to my tiny room, which influenced me to condense the movement. I discovered that my environment affects the choreography I create, which piqued my interest in pursuing choreography in the future. As for song choice, It had several varying beats, so I used the words and a few of the background beats. This provided me flexibility to alter the composition at different points to keep it interesting. As I continue dancing in the future, I hope to take advantage of my surroundings and song choices to make thrilling pieces for myself and others to perform.

  • I had trouble communicating with my peers when I was younger. But dancing allowed me to openly express myself comfortably. Making choreography strengthens my relationships with people when I don't feel like I belong. It lets out all of the pent-up feelings I had throughout the day.
