Dear Grandpa,

  • How can we remember someone we never knew? “Dear grandpa,” a multimedia printmaking project, explores my construction of memories through printed “portraits” of my biological grandfather who I have never met. Rather, his identity was given to him by the collective memory of others. Through reusing the carving block and printing onto echoes of previous markings, I attempted to capture the complex layers of memory and the fragmented nature of remembering and forgetting; print also highlights negative space and what is lost. This series acknowledges our brain’s attempts to construct fragmented memories as a whole. They tell the story of how I construct my memory of my grandfather and how this generational memory is passed down to me.

  • Creativity can be the smallest things in your day you notice—the way the light hits a spot just right, the funky earrings of the person you pass on the street, hearing a song for the first time. For me, creativity has the capacity to be in anything and everything.
