Blossoming

Shading pencils

  • I call this piece “Blossoming” because it shows a flower opening up which to me also represents blossoming as a teenager and coming in to a full bloom. I drew this piece around 13 years old and I feel like it represents my transition as I grew more mature. I used some references to to sketch out an outline as well as a lot of pencil gradients such as 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, & 6B. First, I mapped out where the light was coming from and what shadows needed to be shaded in ( particularly those in the center of the flower and in between the folds of the petals). After that I went over everything with a 2H and started using darker shades like 2B and 4B to deepen my shadows and an eraser to mark out some lighter lines. This took me about 6 or 7 hours but I think it was well worth it and I love this piece.

  • Creativity to me means thinking outside of the box, but it doesn’t have to be something big. It can mean something small like making your coffee with peanut butter. Creativity just means applying new things to everyday normalities.
