Burn-Out

Natalie Z.

Oil paint on canvas

  • When I conceived this self-portrait early this school year, I was deep in the college application process and attempting to balance a busy student and teenager life. These in combination with the infamous “senioritis” played a role in inspiring themes of burn-out, feeling ready for change, and time passing simultaneously quickly and slowly. To me, candles and flames are heavily symbolic. I utilized them because I like how they leave room for interpretation. I hope that viewers can connect and relate to this piece, and ultimately feel less alone in the struggles that come with life.

  • Creativity is introspection, honesty, and vulnerability. When imagining a completely new and unique concept, one has to dig deep within themself in a way that is easier said than done. Creative expression is having the courage to look inward and share what you find with the world.
