Birthday Girl

My film is called "Birthday Girl." I filmed, directed, and acted in it myself. It is set in a house on a quiet street using both the street and the interior of the house. The purpose of this film was to showcase growing into adulthood and leaving teenagehood. Through the use of the character “Girl” and the masked figure, “Body”. I hoped to show how our bodies and the things they do for us are taken for granted. Throughout the film “Girl” is in competition with “Body”. Towards the end of the film “Body sets up a birthday party for “Girl.” But “Girl” can’t accept this act of kindness because she feels like she always has to defeat “Body.” During the final scene of the film, as “Girl” destroys the birthday cake that “Body” made, she does this with little concern for the care and attention needed to make it. As “Girl” consumes “Body”’s face, she devours all that they had to offer her. Showing how we use our bodies while also degrading them and trying to force them to fit societal beauty standards.

To me, creativity means getting to express myself, show others my perspective of the world, and connect to the community around me.
