Attack of the AI

Siena H.

  • Only until quarantine did I realize I had a passion for dance. I had no prior experience in dance, yet when I discovered the world of K-Pop, I found myself entranced by their performances. This inspired me to learn the dances, and eventually I wanted to try out choreography as well. This was the first choreography I have created on my own. I decided to craft a dance portfolio for my acting internship project. This piece was inspired by my favorite K-Pop idols who performed to the same song. I knew I wanted to create choreography for the song, but I was hesitant. As my first ever choreography, I was wary of how many intricacies in the music there are—but I decided to take on the challenge. The song’s robotic and mechanical tones made me think of the emergence of AI. I thought it would be intriguing to create a theme where robots were trying to catch me as one of the last remaining humans, and I was eventually defeated once they caught me. Overall, I am incredibly proud of myself for pursuing something I love and stepping out of my comfort zone. Performing in front of my classmates was nerve-wracking, but I know with each performance I will grow in confidence. There are some parts I feel I could have executed better, but that’s okay—I’m new to creating choreography, I’m learning something new every day, and I couldn't be more excited for what I compose in the future.

  • Creativity is lightning in a bottle. It’s elusive at its core, but much easier to find and harness with practice. I used to be insecure about my “lack” of creativity, but now I understand that it is something one must work at in order for it to pulse stronger.
