Whale Shark Mug

Mirielle H.

  • I created a wheel-thrown and hand sculpted mug, featuring a whale shark. The main cup was thrown on the wheel, and the shark was created separately. I used sgraffito (a technique of layering underglaze and carving away) to create the markings on the whale, then fired it with a clear glaze. In the piece, I was really able to stretch my imagination, as well as my technical knowledge of ceramics.

  • Ceramics helps me go beyond my comfort zone. In most of my classes, the structure is very rigid, and you need to follow directions exactly. In clay, you can take risks, try new ideas and techniques, and it's okay if it doesn't go as planned. It helps me be flexible and grow, in and out of art.
