Turban

Rohan C.

  • "Turban" is a mixed media collage where I used Indian language prayers, music sheets, instruments, yoga, and so on from old Indian scriptures to form the background. These form an essential part of my Indian culture, and are shown in the background. I have also used paint and added texture and enhancements to the main element - the turban. I used pieces of colorful Indian fabric and paper to make a turban, where I added decorations on top to represent the different patterns in turbans as well as the feather at the top. This medium is best to highlight the colorful role of the turban, with the backdrop of ancient Indian cultural elements. The colorful turban is a hallmark of my Indian culture, and its meaning has evolved over the centuries. In ancient times, turbans were worn by kings and spiritual leaders and they symbolized power, respect and honor. Over time, the role and purpose of the turban has evolved. In today's modern era, we see people of all walks of life wear it - as a form of spirituality, to save oneself from the heat, as a fashion statement, and also a mark of honor and respect. I remember being gifted a turban in many occasions as a child - at a wedding of a family member, at a prayer, and as a guest at a hotel. To me, the turban symbolizes a part of my culture that is traditional yet represents the change and modernization of rituals. Just like the turban, I absorb my Indian traditions but adapt it to the modern day and time whilst also living in America.
