Trans Death as Life

Matthew K.

  • This poem was inspired in part by the death of Leelah Alcorn, a trans teenage woman who died by suicide as a result of her parents' constant abuse. While writing this poem, I thought about my own experience as a trans Christian and the spirituality and pain of one's own bodily imperfection.

  • Creative expression through writing has helped me summarize a mess of thoughts about gender, religion, anxiety, and everything I’ve never been able to summarize; poetry has allowed me to be vulnerable, expressive, and comfortable within my own body.
