Things I Should Probably Throw Out

Calvin Ray S.

  • This being my second short film, I went into the process knowing a lot more about how to use my resources to film in a manner that could be shot and edited efficiently and effectively. I wanted to create something short and simple that I could finish in a reasonable time in order to take a break from my longer film project which I was getting bored of editing.

So I approached my two actors with the idea of doing a two-person five-minute film and we built the characters and the story concept together. The inspiration came from a novel that Bee (North) and I had attempted writing in seventh grade from the perspective of a little boy's imaginary friend gradually being forgotten. I wrote the script quickly and before I knew it we were into the thick of it. We spent one day in rehearsal and the next day filming, followed by a month of me behind the computer screen editing. Despite the tediousness, it has helped me develop a much better editing process, it's given me the opportunity to evaluate myself as a director, and it's resulted in a collaborate, intimate film which I feel challenged me technically and artistically.

  • Creativity's both a skill I use in life-to solve problems efficiently, lead people effectively, or understand new perspectives-and in disengaging with life when it's overwhelming or unfulfilling. I turn to art as an audience member or creator to process and release my internalized state of being.
