They Just Keep Moving The Line by M. Shaiman and S. Wittman

Arissa M.

  • I sang “They Just Keep Moving The Line” from the TV show Smash. This song talks about never being enough for people because the standards keep changing. I heard about this song and show through a friend and I immediately knew that I needed to learn it. I love the style of the song and Megan Hilty’s performance. Therefore, I chose to sing it for my application. I don’t have much experience singing jazz music, so I wanted to focus a lot on my technique. I applied some exercises I learned over the summer to help me use my chest voice; I used my body and grounding through my feet to reach into my chest voice without strain. Another thing I focused on was not swallowing my sound. In order to do this, I imagined my voice was like an infinite scarf and I was like a magician pulling it out of a hat. This allowed me to project my voice and open up my vowels. I also used my experience in Musical Theater to add emotion this song. At this point in the TV show, this character does not feel like she will ever succeed because she is constantly compared to her coworker. I channeled this emotion into my body and into my voice. I was able to add intention into my art, which made it sound and feel much better.

  • I have been singing since a very young age, and it has always had a positive impact on my life. Singing lets me express myself and collaborate with my peers to create meaningful art. I have always loved singing, and it will be a part of my life forever.
