The Two Johanas

Johana M.

  • My piece was inspired by Frida Kahlo’s artwork, “ The Two Fridas”. It is a double self portrait depicting two versions of myself. It symbolizes my two different identities. My American and Mexican identities. I wanted my painting to show how my American identity cut off my Mexican identity because I refused to acknowledge myself as Mexican-American. Ever since the 2016 elections I’ve never wanted to be myself. I would constantly deny that I was even a part of the Mexican community. As I grew older I learn to love myself and the person who I was born as. As of now I love myself, I love being Mexican and I love my culture. But with this piece I wanted to show what my mindset was during 2016 to 2020. It’s been tough learning to love myself but I finally now know how to.

  • Exploring and expressing my creative Side has impacted my life by giving me many opportunities. I’ve been able to design and teach because of my creative side. I’ve been able to design for my school and for fellow peers.
