Tallit

  • I took this photo of my friend during the 2021 “Free Palestine” March in San Francisco. I was hoping to get some good shots of the incoming fog as it steadily cast it’s somber spell over the city. As I scoured the streets I came across a parade of protesters holding Palestinian flags. I had forgotten the march was happening, but was happy to cheer in support. I took a couple of shots, but nothing stood out. I was looking through my photos when I was tapped on the shoulder, only to turn around and see him! My Tallit wearing friend. It had been ages, and the first thing he said was, “oh my god take a picture of me!” So I did; before he was even ready I snapped the picture. I wasn’t interested in a posed photo, and I was lucky enough to steal a candid picture of him. He never liked the photo. But this is one of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken.

A boyish teenager in his hoodie and messy hair, wearing a prayer shawl, holding it ever so delicately; just enough to keep it from sliding off his shoulders but not too aggressively. He stares me dead in the eyes. I adore the contrast. I adore the patterns in his Tallit and the patters of the mural and crosswalk behind him. I love this photos because it captures youthfulness, protest, and the diverse place I grew up in.

  • Art is a form of catharsis. It is a tool to explore and expel all of my creative energies in countless forms. Art gives me a chance to be messy, dramatic, and create beautiful things in the process.
