Such a Bright Future

Evelyn H.

  • The basis for this self-portrait piece is hope. The past three years have been discouraging for many, and I wanted to create a piece around the concept of carrying on, with the belief that it gets better. This is my senior year, my last year as a "kid," and with college and career choices imminent, I find myself nerve-wracked as I'm making decisions, hoping it will all turn out right in the end. As youth, we're often told that we have "such a bright future ahead of us." I deeply hope that to be true.

This piece represents that hope. I chose vibrant yellow and orange undertones to support the "bright" themes, and I took my reference photos next to a window with harsh afternoon light, creating drastic shadows on the figure, who is looking up toward the light source representing the future. I focused mainly on saturation and contrast while working on the piece, as I wanted the portrait to be as dynamic as possible.

  • Expressing creativity through the arts is how I explore different storytelling methods. An integral part of human history, I'm compelled to use storytelling to bring people together, and to reflect facets of our reality and our humanity.
