Struggling to Breathe

This art piece depicts a striped bass jumping out of the water, desperately gasping for fresh air. Fish are known to leap from the water when the water quality is poor, or when dissolved oxygen levels are very low. The water in this piece is quite dark, dirty, and not very suitable for life. The murky orange background gives the feeling that everything has been affected by and enshrouded in a contaminated world. Since I used pen as the art medium, every stroke on the paper is permanent. This is similar to how certain forms of pollution that humans put into the natural world often last forever and are very difficult, if not impossible, to get rid of. The fish is also upside down, showing how weak it is and its inability to control how it jumps. It cannot breathe. This is unfortunately the sad reality for many sea creatures as they struggle to survive in their now polluted homes. This art piece addresses pollution, and how it negatively affects wildlife.
