Stay

Stay is a choreographed contemporary duet following the story of an ending relationship, using Rihanna's song of the same name. In this piece we portray partners who were once in a loving and entrancing relationship, one that completely engulfed them. However, over time they have realized it is not one that is healthy to maintain. One wants to continue to fight for this love whom I portray, while the other is ready to close the door on it portrayed by my partner. Both still have a part of them unwilling to let go of the love they once had. The message we hope to convey is that it's okay to want to hold on to something that is not good for you, but in the end, you have to learn to give it up. My partner and I worked on this piece for roughly 4 months, but the initial idea of the dance came very naturally and quickly. We had both felt or experienced similar experiences to the one we were portraying so the piece was very near to our hearts. Even though we were already close friends prior to creating Stay, it brought us closer and strengthened our bond as friends and dancers. Performing this dance became very emotional because we were almost unable to due to illness; luckily we were able to perform it twice for our family and friends and school community. On the stage the rawness and emotion of this dance was so vibrant. The emotion displayed on stage felt genuine and it poured out of us. Many audience members were moved by the piece, as were we while performing. We hope that this dance will move you as well.

I use dance to express myself and distance myself from struggles I am facing. I work through my emotions using movement. I believe dancing is an amazing form of interpretation because you can tell a story without any use of words. I dance with a hope of inspiring someone to start to exploring dance.
