For this piece, I wanted to try a more loose and slightly more abstract style for this piece instead of my normal semi-realistic style. I originally wanted to paint a more fantasy-based piece with a character holding a sword going through a portal, but my sketch changed as I continued on to the samurai it is now. After my rough sketch I only used one brush called the Abstract watercolor brush which was from a custom digital brush pack my teacher told my class and I to download. I tried to vary the line-weight and opacity in my black and white painting. After I painted it in black and white, I started adding more colors on top of my painting and played with blend modes to make the lighting of the gate and the light rays different. Finally, I worked on small details of the piece for another couple hours to render the image a little more. I finished the piece with a vignette and some noise that I turned the opacity down for. I did this entire piece in procreate with a custom brush pack called Aquarelle Brushes that have a lot of custom watercolor brushes. For this piece I wanted to convey a calm and tranquil environment. I think I conveyed this well through the use of lighting making the scene look like it is taking place around sunset. I got inspiration from places like Instagram, YouTube, and just photos on the internet. Overall, compared to my submission last year I think that my art has improved in quality and in stylistic choices.

Exploring and expressing my creativity through art impacts my life by giving me and outlet to be engaged in the moment instead of worrying about life. In addition, expressing my creativity through art also allows me to destress and relax as a break from my busy schedule.
