Ode Cassandre

"Ode à Cassandre" by Pierre de Ronsard, the French poem I was assigned to study, fascinated me. It had a unique rhythm that would work perfectly for voice composition. I found it disturbing, however, that the meaning of the poem was misogynistic and womanizing. What if I used the well-crafted flow of the poem to create a piece that mocked the meaning?
Three days before "Ode à Cassandre" was due to premiere at a concert, the piece was still a hot mess. And then, out of nowhere, came the Eureka moment. I don't have an explanation as to how I found what I needed, but all I remember is running to the piano bench and falling deep into the music realm, as if everything else around me had dissolved.

Composition allows me to creatively express myself and my thoughts about the world, and to transmute my experiences into a form meaningful to the audience. Composition is indispensable to me: not only does it help me process things but also can be a means for me to exhibit myself in a unique way.
