I picked up photography this year. When neither Ceramics or Afro-Haitian Dance were available, I resorted to choosing Beginning Film Photography.
I’ve always enjoyed and excelled in visual arts, especially illustration, collage, painting, multimedia. I have great attention to detail and do well in hands-on activities. Because of this, film photography was very unfamiliar. Creating art while not having complete control or awareness over the outcome is difficult, but I love being challenged! While my prior artistic experience has given me a lot of guidance in composition, color, and perspective, I’m still learning photography at the same pace as my peers.
Throughout this year, I’ve completed my assignments, each one with a different element of photography being emphasized, through portraiture. My favorite thing about photography is the interactive part of it. While taking photos, I’ll be hanging out and talking with the subject, or capturing them in their natural state. A lot of my other visual art is very personal, often focusing on me or things that are part of my identity. Highlighting others allows for a break, and the ability to create meaningful art without having to completely immerse myself in it.
For each project, I try to convey a story— fictional stories, day to day life, or ones that tell the audience about the subject.

By expressing myself to rough visual art, I am able to exercise my technical ability, as well as the creativity and thought processes behind them. I put a lot of my cultural and gender identity in my work, so others can gain an understanding of who I am.
