My House

The concept of this piece was inspired by the Greek myth of Pandora's box. Within this story, a woman named Pandora is given a box by the god Zeus. In some versions of the myth, the box contains terrible evils. In other versions, the box contains wonderful fortunes. My artwork is modeled off of the latter, with my version of Pandora's box being a small, cozy home. I feel the house represents my perfect sanctuary, a place I could go to decompress and shelter myself from the difficulties of real life. I used my favorite colors for the box, with green and pink being the dominant colors in the design. Inside the house, I included an easel, a stack of books, and a record player, because I love to paint, read, and listen to music. Furthermore, all three of these activities are things I do when I want to relax. To read or listen to music are two of my favorite ways to fill the hours. The easel is one of the most significant parts of the house. Creating art is not just a comfort to me but also a necessity. While I have recently been expanding the mediums I use, I am primarily a painter and when a brush is in my hand it just feels right. Creating art is an outlet for my emotions. Many times when I feel strongly about something the best way to articulate those feelings is through artwork. Usually that means painting things that make me happy. For example, recently I’ve been feeling incredibly inspired by music, and feel the need to express my love for certain songs by painting them. These abstract feelings are personified in the little room I’ve created. Overall, my box is supposed to be a representation of me. It's a visual of what my happiness looks like.
Inside of the house there is a bed, an easel, a dresser, a record player which rests on the dresser, two books stacked on each other at the foot of the bed, a wooden plank floor, and a small rug by the dresser. The front piece of the home, on which the door is located, is removable so as to make the inside of the house visible from the front.

Creating art moved beyond being a hobby and has become a focus in my life and is what I am meant to do. I consider making art to be an intrinsic part of my being. I feel the way to express my strong emotions or my passion is to create art.
