Making a Visit

Dillon L.

  • The piece was part of a larger project in which this acts as the front cover booklet for a mix tape CD set. The card stock would be folded in half and the right half would be seen on the front while the left half would be seen on the inside of the CD case. The base medium for the images were hand crafted using clay and cardboard. Then the image was modified in photoshop for the addition of text and the addition of depth to the left half of the image The right half is a top down perspective looking into a grave, there is a coffin inside with a door handle on the lid and a welcome mat on the foot of the grave. The grave is surrounded by green clay which is meant to be grass. The title of the mix tape: "Thoughts In Passing" is embedded in the bare areas of the lawn which are made of cardboard. the left half is supposed to be from the perspective inside the grave looking up at the sky, the images are arranged so that when the booklet is folded in half, the grave opening is aligned on both sides. The feeling intended is grim, presented with the imagery of burial, yet whimsical, with the evidently hand crafted look and inviting aspects of the gravesite. The feeling of the image was coordinated with the feelings of the songs contained which each referred to death or the undead and had a faster jumpy tempo which made the songs feel happier despite the grim connotations.

  • I think making things, drawing or building models and all things of that sort, helps me emotionally. When I make something, I'm averting my focus and at the same time processing a feeling. It's a comfortable form of expression for me because it can be as direct or indirect as I'm comfortable with.
