In My Nightstand Drawer

For the longest time, I always had the mantra that I was not an "art person", I wasn't a particularly talented painter and my sight reading musical notes needed a little bit of work. I, of course, never viewed writing as a form of art or expression but rather as a homework assignment. But, an English class essay changed that. The assignment was to write a personal essay relating to a short story we had read in class, and as I wrote that essay I fell in love with the act of creative writing. After that assignment, every time I needed to process or express my emotions about an event, I turned to writing. This story touches on concepts that shaped me as a child of immigrant parents growing up in a world where fitting in was my one goal and of the power of nature to bring people together. This was one of the very first stories I wrote and have constantly changed it over the past year so it displays my evolution in my artistic journey. Writing this story helped me uncover realizations about my family and reflect upon events that I, as a child, deemed perfectly normal.

In a world as tumultuous as ours expressing my creativity through writing allows me to process the emotions and events that occur in my life. By writing about my life I am able to better understand the past's effects me and have an outlet to release emotions that come with interacting with the past.
