illusion

My piece “illusion” is a free-verse poem about being deceived by someone who is two-faced. When I wrote this poem, there was a person in my life who I found toxic and manipulative, however, everyone around them was unable to see them in the same light. At this time, the toxic person in my life was bothering me greatly, so I wrote a poem about the illusions that one puts up in order to appeal to others, focusing on how the narrator is the only one who’s able to see through their facade.
When deciding on if I wanted to write the poem literally or figuratively, I went with the figurative choice because I felt like it would be more subtle and intriguing. As a fan of fantasy, I decided to illustrate the manipulative person as a siren-like creature, hypnotizing their audience during the day, and revealing their monstrous persona at night.

Exploring and expressing my creativity is like looking into a mirror and reflecting on my identity, which is comprised of my beliefs, opinions, and morals. Expressing my creativity is a form of release-- it allows me to share the parts of me that I wouldn't usually put out there.
