If We Parted, That Might Be Better for Us (Original)

Nancy T.

  • In my AP English Literature Class, we were tasked with the challenge of writing our own poem choosing a line from the book, "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett. The catch was that it we only had 10-20 minutes to complete it, meaning we couldn't stop writing in the time duration. We had to reuse our chosen phrase multiple times, where I decided on using the quote, "If we parted, that might be better for us." This particular quote stood out to me, as I enjoy sentimentalism and exploring the different capacities of love. Love can transform into something beautiful, yet heartbreaking. This poem encapsulates the pain of a long distance relationship that hasn't blossomed.

As someone that also deeply enjoys attaching visuals to words, I chose to read my poem out loud in my room. My room reflects my personality, as I am deeply sentimental and enjoy hanging up collages on my walls, along with the lighting of a pink spotlight. My room is filled with color, where I hope my words spark vivid imagery and emotion in the like. By reading my poetry out loud, it is in its most raw form possible, as acting poetry out provides a voice to accompany message on paper.

  • I am primarily attracted to words and colors, as they give me freedom to explore my expansive range of interests. I've used different mediums from violin, scrapbooking, writing letters, poetry, videography, and collages. Through creating, I utilize my empathy to connect with myself and others.
