How to (Un)do Gender (Original)

Sam B.

  • Normally, I do ceramics, photography, sculpture, and mixed media artwork. However, when prompted "to reckon with the concrete, embodied experience of gender" through video format for English class, I made this. I experimented with my body as if it were some kind of puppet, exploring its coded movements, and the much wider range of expressivity than masculinity allows. I added a voice over to add a a layer of consciousness, to the otherwise hypnotic video, the kind of self-coaching we do to maintain our affinity with gender standards.

  • It becomes a way to interact with the world. Ceramics, my main medium, is a lesson in attention, patience, and practice, and photography is a lesson in ways of seeing.
