Hide and Seek

Chloe H.

  • During a summer camp at my art studio, my teacher encouraged me to use a knife and carve out a picture on a scratchboard. Although I was extremely hesitant to use a knife to draw realistically—seeing as I was already uncertain about having to draw out realistic images using an actual pencil—after encouragement from my teacher, I slowly started tracing out a picture of my dog Chippy with zero faith. The resulting proportions were incorrect, the legs were lopsided, and his eyes looked spaced apart. As I was scrolling through my pictures to find a different candidate to draw, I discovered an old picture of my dog hiding underneath a blanket during a game of hide-and-seek. With a newfound drive to depict this hilarious scene to the best of my abilities, I found that I actually loved the ending result. I tried my best to capture the wolfish gleam in Chippy’s eyes, and the piece seemed like a glimpse into his childish and “chippy” personality.

  • While some have always known that they’ve wanted to be an artist, my version of “exploring creativity” led to juggling piles of extracurriculars outside of art. While it was somewhat of a setback, I believe that it allowed me to gain experience from all areas of life, forming the person I am today.
