Goodbye Again

Zoe C.Z.

  • Goodbye Again is a microfiction piece that explores loss, grief, and change. It reflects on the challenges of having a friend whose illness controls them, and the small things that one can do to show they matter. I decided to take a more melancholy approach to the idea that there is no promise for tomorrow with our loved ones, and that every tradition has an end. For example, the characters in this piece had a promise that they always told each other, but one of them is left with a sunken feeling when the tradition ends.

I knew I wanted the piece to have a subtle impact with an ending that didn’t uplift the situation. Instead, I wanted to include a moment for the narrator to reflect. The challenge became crafting the sweet details of the relationship that would contrast the devastating ending.

  • Writing allows me to reflect and process past events and memories; it gives me an outlet. I am grateful to have the ability to explore all my fantasies and what-ifs through writing. Nothing beats writing with pen and paper while I watch the ink flow with all my thoughts.
