Forget Me Not, Returning to My Roots, Withering

I like to express my creativity through poetry. Not everyone immediately thinks of this as an art form, but I enjoy writing it as a way to express and evoke my thoughts and feelings in an intuitive and transparent matter. Poets like Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Shakespeare are the roots of my passion and strive to write like them.
I started writing as a joke back in middle school with my friends, teasing each other about our love lives and silly mishaps. It was an on and off relationship with poetry at the time due to school and other personal issues taking up most of my time. Eventually, I had a fallout in writing poetry because I was too overwhelmed to focus on anything else.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit back in 2020, I thought of finding new hobbies to keep myself busy with all the free time I suddenly had. I’ve tried painting, writing stories, and journaling to pass the time. All were great, but they didn’t quite stick to me. That was when I revisited writing in a more poetic form. It was a very rejuvenating feeling to be coming back to something I thought was a lighthearted interest.
Unfortunately, academics and extracurriculars struck me again, taking my time away to write. However, I still found some time to settle down with my pencil and notebook to write until I am drained of ideas. Luckily, I was given the opportunity to publish my writing through a program called Sunset Media Wave. I knew I had to take this chance to do what I enjoy before college hits. I have successfully crafted my first poetry collection titled, “flower arboretum”. This collection of poems surround growth, love, defeat, and acceptance through the theme of “After Bloom”. I pull my inspirations from simple things like the flowers that grow at school, quotes from books I read, and anything I do with my friends whenever we hang out. Anything that I find interesting in my surroundings immediately get written down to use for new poems to arise.
I’m very passionate and committed to writing poetry. It is very meaningful to me because it paints a picture while telling a story through metaphoric stanzas. I want to continue writing more poetry that I could publish to share my stories as a way to express myself and the feelings I normally conceal.

I always saw poetry as a very underrated but impactful way to express my feelings. Not everyone sees poetry as an art form, but I want to bring more attention to it because it’s a new way to tell stories and convey important messages surrounding major issues people deal with.
