• Artist Statement

  Historically, the markers of womanhood have been defined through the constraints of beauty, fragility, and loving motherhood. However, the story of Medea in Greek Mythology exemplifies the true complexity and power women possess. Culturally, our perception of her story has shifted with time, and this transformation of public perception is indicative of a larger cultural shift towards empowering women -- straying from the long constraints of a woman's identity as mere objects of desire and candidates for motherhood. In this photo, I wished to highlight her power and ferocity as a testament to what women are capable of in the face of extreme emotions. By focusing on her blade and arm as opposed to her face and utilizing an upward angle, I hoped to convey her might -- exemplifying how women are far more than docile and powerless.

  Creativity proliferates the air we breathe and shapes our perception of reality. In a world that often critiques those who are different, the persistence of creative thinking enables freedom and change. Creative outlets allow me to share my genuine perspectives and communicate my thoughts.
