Escapism

Miranda M.

  • This piece depicts a figure sitting in front of a closed door with their face obstructed, staring at a phone. Everything is shaded in graphite pencil except for the face, which is illuminated by the blinding blue light of the phone screen. This represents my habit of avoiding expending the immense effort needed to escape the dull situation I find myself in mentally, instead opting to loose myself and my worries in social media. By drawing out my experience, I've found that I'm better able to recognize when I'm slipping into this pattern and am able to check myself before it gets too bad.

  • Expressing my creativity allows me to understand myself and the world around me while also being able to make statements about the things that matter to me, like mental health and LGBTQ+ rights. My art is the expression and recognition of the wonderful chaos that is my soul and my experiences.
