  • Back in 2018, my grandmother passed away. She was instrumental in my early upbringing. Since I can remember, my parents were always working to support our family of seven; this included my oldest brother, my older sister, my youngest sister, my grandmother, and myself. Because of this, I rarely saw them other in the morning before school. So, my grandmother served as a stand-in for both of my parents.

For my submission, I chose a Buddhist monk and a dragon because they are two motifs prominent in Cambodian culture. I also thought they were appropriate because, in a way, they embody my grandmother’s personality. She was a devout Buddhist but, like a dragon, she had an intensity to her temperament. She taught me to embrace the spiritual ideals of Buddhism while also applying the passionate demeanor of a dragon to my goals. This illustration was created digitally on a Gaomon Pd1560 drawing tablet on the software, Krita.

  • Visual art has always been a creative outlet during the most intense circumstances. Since I can remember, I made it an obligation to consistently improve my craft for the sake of expressing my artistic endeavors. I aspire to encourage the creative peers I meet along this journey.
