Deep and Surface of the Ocean

Siya X.

  • I am the primary producer of this art project. I receive support and association from my ceramics instructor. As this is the first formal and representative project I have manufactured. It took approximately 2 months to complete the entire process, from sketching to finishing the glazing. The project takes place during the ceramics courses at College Park High School. The artwork was based on our assignment regarding Pandora’s box. We were asked to create a positive response to the negativity released into the work and I was inspired by various personal experiences and well-known works.

I believe that the environment in which a person grows up can contribute to diverse aesthetic and landscape perceptions. Many artists express and combine their personal experiences with their art projects and I am following in their footsteps. From there, a wide selection of contemporary and classical works was exhibited. I started learning art since 5 years old, it affected me a lot. In my way of creating art, I feel really focused and enjoy my own time to express myself. Also the sense of achievement after finishing the work. I grew up in a coastal city, Shenzhen, China. And I appreciate the tranquility that watching the sea brings to me. Admiring the boundless sea makes me feel a sense of pleasure and gleaming.

The project takes the idea of Pandora's Box. The teacher instructed us to research the background story of it. However, I am transforming the negative side and turning to a positive expression. The box is looking forward to expressing the gleaming, compelling aspects through my point of view. While sketching, I had an idea for the top and got inspiration from the Great Wave of Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Deep-water organisms are present in the body of the project. Consequently, I developed decorations of depths and oceanic organisms around my work. Additionally, I created a pearl, whale, whale over water, and boat as the stands.

Throughout the box, my work has the dominant theme of aqua green, green, and blue. I have generated a multitude of textures to give the waves the most realistic look. Furthermore, overglazes have been applied to the body and the handle part of the project. I used underglaze inside of the box with clear glaze as the second layer, as well as on the edge and the bottom of the stand.

  • Art is a method of expressing my creativity about Chinese traditions and aesthetics. As an immigrant, I had the privilege of having my Chinese artwork published in the local newspaper in China. This honor built confidence to expand my skills as a maker and explore art expression in different media.
