Beautiful

Jade M.

  • This photograph, "Beauty", is a representation and reflection of beauty standards through the eyes of the camera lens. The subject is intended to be obviously saddened with herself as the standards of beauty weigh upon her. She looks into the lens with no emotion in her eyes but the feeling that she is tired and used to this treatment. As the hands emerge out of the darkness with a mascara wand violently pulling but her eyebrow in order to apply the makeup. The beauty standards that specifically teenage girls are put under are truly so difficult, I aimed to depict the beauty of the subject's natural face, her freckles, textured skin, and even the burn on her lip. All of these aspects of her face are expected to be hidden in covered up by concealer or makeup if she were held to the beauty standards of today. Not only is there beauty in her skin but additionally in her strength as she remains composed while dealing with these societal expectations pushed upon her.

  • Throughout my years of schooling, I felt that I completely lost touch with my creative side, over quarantine I was able to jump back into drawing and taking pictures. I signed up for a photo honors class this year and having this opportunity to express this side of myself at school has been amazing.
