A Year to Remember

“A Year to Remember” commemorates the year of 2020: full of chaos with COVID-19, lack of real social interaction and numerous political protests. This piece captures my experiences throughout the year. I created this piece by first assembling a collage on canvas and then using acrylic to paint a self-portrait. The collage encapsulates the intense news coverage and turmoil of 2020, and the black paint represents the permanence of the year on my life and stands out against the collage and white canvas. Ultimately, reflecting on that tumultuous year, I learned to pick myself up and persist through obstacles – just a small pothole in the highway that is my life.

Creativity is a means of catharsis for me and a way of translating my emotions and often jumbled thoughts into a visual product. Expressing myself through art develops and refines my style and perspective of the world.
