From the very first moment I saw the Winged Victory of Samothrace I knew it was a masterpiece. The statue, frozen in stillness and age-old marble has always felt wholly alive. In my art history class I learned that it dates back to the 2nd century BCE and was found in the Aegean Sea. It was one of the first sculptures that interacted with its environment. Her windswept clothes, soaring wings, and weighted stance embodies the triumph of the human spirit. She is breathtaking and incomplete. I’ve been compelled to paint her since I was 12, hoping to capture the way light dances on its broken marble, how the wings spread wide and open. The statue of Nike will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m very glad I got the opportunity to paint the goddess and learn her form.

Creativity, to me, is the act of breathing life into what is around you. Creativity is not linear, it’s bound to no path; it carves its own, sometimes backward, sometimes sideways, but always seeking the edges of the unknown. It’s quite rebellious in that way.
