During the summer I took UCLA’s TeenArch online architecture program and we were tasked to build an extension for their architecture school building, Perloff Hall. I first began with origami methods of aggregation to begin the design process. The geometric design inspired my extension of aggregated triangles and hexagons, which provides a contrasting appearance to the smooth walls of the preexisting building. I also make this contrast through material as my extension is made out of aluminum composite, which is slightly reflective and differs from the current building’s brick walls. My design functions as a cafe for students and staff to relax and socialize. Additionally, the geometric pattern of the cafe trickles down the building to create a “hugging” effect, which allows my design to interact with the preexisting building.

Creativity to me is the exploration of the unknown whether that is an introspective reflection or innovation driven by curiosity. Creativity is also the ability to express one’s desires and thoughts in various forms of media.
