The Essence in Youth

Charlotte H.

Acrylic paint

  • This piece explores the transition from childhood to adulthood through a layered combination of watercolor and acrylic techniques. The piece begins with a light wash of yellow, creating a subtle, glowing background that symbolizes optimism and the brightness of youth. This initial wash is allowed to peek through the final painting, symbolizing the persistence of memory. To add depth, light washes of color are used and the process of ripping and taping paper onto the canvas creates texture that evokes a dreamlike quality. Acrylic paints, heavily diluted with water, enhance this ethereal effect. Elements such as a corner sun, simplistic flowers, and houses represent fleeting memories of childhood, while the figure’s facial expression and body language convey a sense of sadness and longing. The work captures both the beauty and melancholy of growing up, evoking nostalgia and a yearning for simpler times.

  • To me creativity is the experimentation and exploration of the possibilities of the ideas, materials, and processes of the visual arts. It involves thinking of solutions outside of the box.
