Something Precious

This is a charcoal piece of a still life we constructed in the center of our classroom. As I delved into shading this piece, I let my mind wander to the origins of each object in my piece. The sculpted head seems like it was meant for drawing; how many people have tried to capture its likeness? The shoes are hard and weathered, marks of all the places they’ve seen. The skull in the background, the shininess of the beads, the flowers that have been sketched time and time again. They’ve all been cherished in one way or another. Every single object is something precious.

Creativity is the tumultuous battle between what runs through your head and what controls your hands. I know that no matter what I dream up, my skills will follow behind, slowly refined again and again until I can draw exactly what I imagine.
