Self-Portrait

Jessica K.

acrylic paint, color pencil, ink, gold leaf, batik fabric

  • “Self-Portrait” reflects the duality of my identity as a Chinese, Indonesian, and Taiwanese artist. Often questioned about ”what I am” due to the ambiguity of my last name, ‘Kwandou,’ and my appearance, I have hesitated to fully embrace my Chinese and Taiwanese heritage without speaking the language, and Indonesia, which is frequently unrecognized. This piece symbolizes my journey toward self-acceptance, breaking away from stereotypical Asian conventions. Porcelain plate fragments, adorned with blue and white floral designs, represent the shattering of stereotypes surrounding my Chinese culture, while revealing the rich diversity beneath. The red of my Chinese and Taiwanese upbringing is intertwined with delicate gold patterns inspired by Indonesian batik, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of these cultural influences. I embrace the complexity of my identity, recognizing that the pieces don’t always fit neatly together. Through this work, I hope to inspire others to define themselves authentically, rather than through societal perceptions.

  • Creativity is the ability to see beyond the surface of things and imagine new possibilities. It’s a process of transforming ideas, emotions, or experiences into something tangible and meaningful. Creativity allows us to connect with ourselves and others, finding unique ways to interpret the world or solve problems.
