retrospect on devotion / flightless (earthbound) / kintsugi

Gabby L.

  • This year, I’ve found myself often using the current climate crisis to reflect on my identity and interpersonal relationships and vice versa. In these pieces, I wanted to explore the relationship between the climate and loss in my writing. In ”retrospect on devotion,” I compare my regrets and reflections around a past friendship with the world around me: in place of exact memories, most of my emotions can be tied to my surroundings. I further this in ”flightless (earthbound),” which highlights the biodiversity crisis with emphasis on loss. FInally, in ”kintsugi,” I end on a hopeful note--despite both ecological and internal hardships, both myself and the earth will continue to persevere. I tried to use vivid imagery, structure, and various literary devices to convey the complex emotions around grieving and growing. I hope that readers resonate with my emotions in these pieces!

  • To me, creativity is an outlet that I can use to connect with others. Creativity is a universal language that everyone can use to express their feelings, to share how they see the world, and to make meaningful change through their art.
