Nishikigoi

Last summer, I visited family in Japan, who live in Nagoya, a large city in central Japan. There, I explored several landmarks, including an aquarium, government buildings, and shrines. While I sauntered through one shrine, I stumbled upon a pond, quiet and blissful in the early morning. The photo depicts life within the pond, as the carp, or “koi” in Japanese, swims close to the rocks with curiosity. In my eyes, the photo illustrates peace in nature, as the koi swim together, coexisting with each other and the camouflaged turtle, hidden in the corner. The vibrant scales shine above the water’s surface, displaying the variant colors of these nishikigoi, grasping and holding me in awe. The calm, peaceful nature of the fish leads to a stillness within this one frame, a frozen moment in time, and for me, a peace and tranquility of mind.

For me, creativity is an expression. Using my photography, I can use different mechanics to convey a story of emotions, color, textures, and layers, packing it into one, still frame. Creativity makes photography, as it forces you to look beyond, into fine details, altering the perspective of everyday life.
